How Mechanical Mouse Encoders Cause Scroll Jumping
Most gaming mice utilize a mechanical rotary encoder (such as TTC Gold, Kailh, or ALPS). Inside the encoder, two spring-loaded copper contacts slide across a circuit wheel to pulse quadrature signals (A/B channels) to the microcontroller.
Over time, dust, skin oils, or mechanical oxidation coat the contacts, causing the sensor to misread an "up" pulse as a "down" pulse. Our automatic glitch counter monitors directional sequences and flags whenever an opposing delta occurs within a 50ms window.
How to Clean and Fix a Jumping Mouse Scroll Wheel
- Inverted Compressed Air Blast: Turn your mouse upside down. Use a can of compressed air with a thin straw directly into the gap beside the scroll wheel while rapidly rolling the wheel.
- High-Purity Isopropyl Alcohol (99%): Disconnect mouse cable or turn off battery. Apply 2-3 drops of 99% IPA into the rotary encoder wheel housing. Scroll vigorously for 60 seconds to clean internal oxidation. Let dry for 15 minutes.
- Encoder Solder Replacement: If the copper contact leaf is physically bent, desolder the faulty encoder and replace it with a dust-proof optical or gold-core encoder ($2 on Amazon/AliExpress).
