When evaluating high refresh rates, understanding the frametime equation (Δt = 1000 / Hz) explains why the initial jump from 60Hz to 144Hz feels more dramatic than 144Hz to 240Hz:
- 60Hz to 120Hz: Frametime decreases by 8.33ms (from 16.66ms to 8.33ms).
- 60Hz to 144Hz: Frametime decreases by 9.72ms (from 16.66ms to 6.94ms).
- 144Hz to 240Hz: Frametime decreases by 2.78ms (from 6.94ms to 4.16ms).
- 240Hz to 360Hz: Frametime decreases by 1.39ms (from 4.16ms to 2.77ms).
Although 2.78ms sounds small, in human tracking experiments it produces a 30% reduction in targeting error and near-zero motion blur on modern OLED and Fast-IPS panels.
Pixel Response Times (GtG) vs Refresh Cycles
A 240Hz refresh rate requires a new frame every 4.16ms. If a monitor's Gray-to-Gray (GtG) pixel response time is 5ms, the liquid crystals cannot complete their color transitions before the next refresh cycle arrives, creating ghosting or trailing artifacts. Fast-IPS panels (≤ 1ms GtG) and OLED panels (0.03ms GtG) easily keep pace with 240Hz and 360Hz refresh cycles.
