Every LCD monitor (IPS, VA, TN) utilizes a backlight unit (LED or Mini-LED) that projects white light through polarizing filters, liquid crystal layers, and RGB color filters. The two most common dark-room uniformity complaints originate from completely different physical mechanisms:

The 3-Step Head Movement Test

  1. Darken the Environment: Turn off ambient room lighting and set your display brightness to your typical working level (40–60%).

How to Reduce IPS Glow and Backlight Bleed

While IPS glow cannot be eliminated completely due to liquid crystal physics, you can drastically reduce its visual impact by:

  • Increasing Viewing Distance: Maintain at least arm's length (28–36 inches) distance from 27" and 32" monitors.
  • Adding Bias Ambient Lighting: Placing a 6500K LED light strip behind your monitor raises ambient pupil constriction, making perceived black levels appear significantly deeper.
  • Checking Bezel Pressure: In severe cases of backlight bleed, gently loosening VESA mount screws that exert uneven chassis torque can relieve internal panel pressure.

How do I definitively tell if my monitor has IPS glow or backlight bleed?

Step back 4 to 6 feet from your monitor in a dark room. If the light patches in the corners vanish or change intensity as you tilt your head, it is normal IPS glow. If the bright yellow/white spots stay fixed along the bezel edge regardless of viewing distance, it is physical backlight bleed.

Is backlight bleed covered under warranty RMA?

Yes, excessive backlight bleed that obscures letterbox bars or dark scenes during normal daylight desktop viewing is usually eligible for a warranty replacement. IPS glow is considered panel physics and is not covered.
